Bill Speeg The Bill Speeg Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2016. The Fund honors the late Bill Speeg, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 46. The top three finishers in the Local and Rally Divisions of the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship race annually receive scholarships from the Fund. Speeg, of Valley Center, Calif., became involved with the Soap Box Derby in 1999 when his daughter Ashley began to race. Speeg quickly became involved in local Oceanside and statewide California Soap Box Derby activities, serving as a board member and in other official capacities. The Speeg family traveled to races throughout the country where he offered technical support, financial assistance and mentoring to many young racers. He had served as a Regional Director for nearly 10 years at the time of his passing. He was vice president of Freeberg Industrial Fabrication Corp. in Escondido, Calif.
